"New Divide" is the first new Linkin Park song in over two years and the band says they were personally asked by Transformers director Michael Bay to contribute to the sequel, after their single "What I've Done" was prominently featured in the first Transformers film.
Bennington said that "this song could easily fit on any one of our records. It's definitely got a classic Linkin Park feel to it." He added, "We treated it as if we were gonna put it on one of our records and look it as the first single off the next record."
Shinoda added that the track was inspired by the themes of the film, including Shia La Beouf's character Sam Witwicky "fighting his past vs. his future." Shinoda said that in writing "New Divide," "We tried to relate to the character and what he's going through."
As previously reported, the video for "New Divide" was directed by Linkin Park member Joe Hahn. Shinoda says the clip will "visually represent the dynamic collision between the organic elements and the digital elements" in the song and in the movie itself.
